Rescue Dogs & Nervous Dogs
Thrive with Dog Guard®
Every Dog Deserves a Second Chance at Freedom
Adopting a rescue dog is one of the most rewarding decisions you can make. Whether your dog came from a shelter, a rescue organization, or a difficult past, they deserve the opportunity to safely enjoy the outdoors and experience the freedom every dog loves.
At Dog Guard of Ohio, we've successfully trained countless rescue dogs, timid dogs, anxious dogs, and nervous dogs to safely use our Dog Guard® Out of Sight Fencing System. While these dogs may require a little extra patience and individualized training, we've found that they often become some of our greatest success stories.
Rescue Dog Training FAQs
-
This is one of the most common questions we hear.
The answer is yes!
Every dog learns at their own pace. Some rescue dogs are immediately confident, while others need additional time to build trust and understand their new boundaries. That's perfectly okay.
Our team adjust each training session to your dog's personality, confidence level, and learning style. We never rush the process, and we'll make sure both you and your dog feel comfortable every step of the way.

Our basic training for the dog fence usually has dogs off leash within the week. But we know some dogs simply need a little more encouragement and time.
Dogs who have experienced neglect, abuse, frequent rehoming, or limited socialization may be more cautious in new situations. That's why we focus on creating positive experiences during training.
Our training emphasizes:
Building confidence instead of creating fear
Positive reinforcement and clear communication
Slow, consistent progress at your dog's pace
Helping owners understand how to continue reinforcing success at home
If your dog needs an extra training visit or additional guidance, we're happy to provide it at no cost. Our goal isn't just to install a fence, it's to ensure your dog understands it and feels confident using it.

We suggest that any rescue dog or even new puppy be at the home and property for AT LEAST two weeks. No dog would want to get corrected in their new backyard immediately. How scary would that be?! The yard should smell like them and they should understand that this property is their new home and that their people are there and with them so they feel safe.
Why Rescue Dogs Often Excel
Many rescue dogs form incredibly strong bonds with their new families. Once trust has been established, they often become highly responsive during training.
We've worked with:
Shelter dogs
Rescue organization adoptions
Former strays
Dogs rescued from neglectful situations
Timid and fearful dogs
Dogs with anxiety or low confidence
Time after time, we've watched these dogs transform from uncertain newcomers into happy, confident companions safely enjoying their yards.
Freedom Changes Lives
One of our favorite parts of this job is watching a rescue dog discover what it's like to simply be a dog.
Running across the yard. Playing fetch. Watching squirrels.
Relaxing in the sunshine. Exploring safely with their family nearby.
There's something incredibly special about seeing a dog who may have never experienced true freedom finally enjoy it with confidence and security.
We Celebrate Every Rescue
We have a special place in our hearts for rescue dogs and the families who choose them.
Choosing adoption means giving a deserving dog a second chance, a chance at safety, love, stability, and a forever home. We're honored to play a small part in that journey by helping provide a safe outdoor space where they can thrive.
Whether your dog is outgoing or shy, confident or cautious, we'll work together to create a training plan that sets them up for success.
