How old should my dog be to train to a dog fence?

Dog Guard of Ohio recommends that puppies be at least 12 weeks old before correction training. If we install your fence prior to them being 12 weeks or if they are the newest addition to your dog pack and you already have a Dog Guard fence, we suggest "Beep Training" until they are old enough.

Beep training is exactly what it sounds like. We tape off the metal probes on their receiver/collar so there is no static correction, but only an audible beep. Anytime a pup gets too close to the boundary flags, their collar will beep and you would give them a tug back towards the house to make sure they stepped back into their boundaries. Obviously due to the lack of a physical static correction, a pup can just cross the boundary without any consequence if you let them. We recommend making sure they stay in their boundaries at this point so they smell themselves in their "safe" area and not outside of it. That is why "Beep Training" is just getting the dogs adjusted to their new yard while also getting them used to wearing their new collar/receiver.

We recommend beep training for several scenarios:

- Puppies that aren't quite old enough to be corrected. *Dog Guard of Ohio suggests and prefers them to be at least 12 weeks.

- Dogs that are in a brand new yard/house so they can get adjusted to their new yard before getting corrected in it. We recommend beep training for a week or two. (If they've already been trained to a dog fence at a prior residence, beep training is not necessary.)

- Dogs that may have behavioral issues. (Super timid, past trauma, etc.)
