Why is flag training to a dog fence important?
Flag training and associating the flags with a quick static correction is important for your pup to learn where their boundary is. It gives your furry companion a nice, solid, visual reference on how far they can go. After enough time, some trial and error, they learn to avoid the flags. When the flags are taken down after the training process, your dog knows where their boundary is by scent and their own visual cues.
Occasionally we will get a panicked call about a failed DIY training. Where someone tried to train their dog on their own by just putting the receiver/collar on their pup and throwing them outside without any flags. Sometimes they say they walked their dog around with a leash and had an active collar on, but did not put any flags up. They just continually walked their pup into the boundary line all around the yard. Yes, they'll get corrected if they run into their correction boundary, but now it may appear to be happening "randomly" to them.
Imagine being thrown into dark room and being told you'll learn where the walls are when you run into them. (In this scenario, assume the walls give you a physical static correction every time you do come into contact with them.) Many people would just stay in one spot for fear of hitting a wall since they can't see them and have no idea where they are. Many of these non-flag trained dogs end up the same way. Why would they leave the safety of their house/patio/porch if they have no idea where or why they are being corrected.
Flag training is so important and it does not matter what dog fence brand you have. It not only teaches your pup where their boundary is, but it also helps them to know why they are getting corrected. They got too close to a boundary. It is a helpful tool for them to SEE the boundary while they're training and know they won't get corrected randomly in the big, safe areas of their yard. No surprises! After enough time with a flagged boundary, they learn where they're at by scent and their own visual cues.
